So I have been wanting to create an art wall in my house, just trying to decide on the perfect spot... the office or the living room? If you're beginning to create an art wall, keep in mind that your art can be unconventional... a pretty page from a magazine or calender, a vintage greeting card- or scrapbook papers! Using inexpensive gallery frames, mixed in with a few thrift store finds and your favorite scrapbook papers, you can make your own art wall in 30 minutes for $30! Here are some (stunning!) real life art walls for inspiration, found on flickr.
(Just click on the photos for the source!)...Choose a color scheme...... or choose color......Use vintage frames to add interest......Combine collections and trinkets......Get creative with papers to make a "patchwork" effect.

Happy Valentine's Day! ♥ Any plans for this romantic weekend?
Kevin and I are going out this evening, and I have found the perfect outfit, including the most gorgeous handmade clutch from Sew Lola. I was looking for an excuse to buy it, so when I saw that the champagne silk was a perfect match to my top, it had to be mine! As some of you may know, I have bit of an addiction to Sephora beauty... Well I did my homework and found the perfect 'sexy yet subtle' makeup too! Dark black liner & lashes paired with champagne shadow, blushing cheeks and nude lips. Sephora offers a variety of kits to make it easy for you, and if you're going for the cat eye look- very retro glam- I recommend trying a gel liner. They're easier to work with than a pencil or liquid liner, and the brushes will help you get the perfect point. I'm so sorry to have disappeared again. I miss you, my humble little blog! And on our first anniversary, too! Where does the time go? Life has just been getting in the way, and I put some of the simple, enjoyable things on the back burner for a bit. I took some time off from working after the Holidays and then I played catch up for another month after that... I still have more new goodies to list in the shop, though I've been adding hair pins and earrings like a maniac and have a record 165 items in my etsy shop right now!

I learned some new things; Flame working at a local studio to make my own glass beads, and the tip of the iceberg that is PhotoShop! I'm excited to start using what I've learned to add new features to my blog and photographs. I also spent some time organizing the chaos that is my "studio", and also my home. I am a natural clutter freak, but I have a hard time focusing in an utter disaster. There is still plenty to be done there as well, believe me, but that will have to wait until my poor toe is feeling better! So finally, I spent the last month visiting the doctors and dentists that I have avoided for some time, joined a gym, and am working on just feeling better and being healthier! Spring always makes me happy, energetic and motivates my creativity... so here's to hoping for lots of sunny days!

I promise not to ignore you, blog. Though it may be unrealistic to say I will post 5 days a week (which then causes me to get overwhelmed and 'forget it' all together...) I do solemnly swear to post as frequently as possible, here and there, not because I have to... but because I enjoy it. Er, you, dear blog.

"The Sims". I will sporadically play for hours on end and then get so sick of it... until the next time.

Tie Dye yoga pants, a flouncy tube top that I spent over an hour trying to find this morning because I love it and then became obsessed with finding it when it was nowhere to be found, my "Soho Luxe" earrings, and a side pony tail which my boyfriend claims makes me look like Pocahontas.

As soon as etsy introduced Google Analytics for our shops, I signed up. The whole thing looked awfully confusing at first, but I've managed to figure things out pretty well and the information provided can be very useful for determining where to advertise, how people are finding your etsy shop, and what tags and keywords people are using to land at your site. People have asked me over and over where my traffic comes from. I always say "word of mouth" and "repeat customers", and according to my google analytics reports, it's true. The majority of my traffic is "direct", as you can see in the pie chart, and not from people searching or finding me through links on other sites. In addition, over 33% of that direct traffic is from people visiting my shop for the first time.
In order to get accurate information, make sure that you filter your IP address; You don't want to include yourself in the traffic data. Steps to do this can be found in the etsy forums, where I learned tons about Google Analytics! In this report here, you can see that four of the top five search terms people use to find my shop are simply variations of "miabeads"... maybe tags aren't that important after all? You can access this list of keywords by going to "content" on the left side of the reports page, and then selecting "site search".

How can you use the traffic sources report to determine where to advertise in the future? When in the report overview, select "all traffic sources" and you will see a chart like this:

This is a list of my top 20 traffic sources; At the top you see "direct" traffic and then the following are "referring sites". Referring sites are those with a link, ad, or article about your shop or sites where people frequently come to your shop after visiting. By clicking on the individual site names, you will get a lot of information about when people are visiting, how long they stay on your site and what pages they are looking at. To me, this is one of the most valuable tools that Google Analytics has to offer.

The referring site I chose to interpret was Vintage Glam Weddings. This was a blog that I hosted a giveaway on a few weeks ago. The graph is typical of what you will see when hosting a giveaway, placing an ad, or being featured on a blog. There is a spike in views for the first few days, and then the views slowly trickle as the article/ad/giveaway is no longer featured. In total, the blog sent 348 visits, however, only 18% of these were from new visitors. I will have to decide whether or not I feel like that is enough of a new audience for me to advertise on that blog again. The average visitor did look at 7.29 pages on my site, which is more than the 4.82 that I average overall, but spent less time in my shop. This is pretty typical of a giveaway where people have to choose a favorite item from your shop to enter. This information is a really helpful when deciding where, and when, to place online ads.
Other helpful reports:

What percentage of your visitors are returning? While in reports, click on "Visitors" and then "New vs. Returning". A pie chart will show your percentages. What time of day does your etsy shop get the most traffic? While in reports, click on "Visitors" then "Visitor Trending" and then "Visits" below that. Next to the graph that appears, there will be a small clock symbol in the top right; This will show your traffic per hour in a graph like the one here.

I hope you can use some of this information to see who is checking out your shop and where that traffic is coming from, what tags you should use, and even when the best times to renew or list a new item is. In addition to designing all sorts of fun baubles & glitz for us, Kelly also teaches elementary music during the day and still finds time to run a second etsy shop featuring her photography! I met Kelly when we worked together at 'Bead Creative' and she is so full of energy and love for life and those around her. Hope you enjoy her story... AND, she is giving away a pair of sweet earrings to one lucky winner. Here's Kelly in her own words...

I'm a true Buffalonian in every sense of the word: I was born and raised here, I don the 'Cheektowaga accent', I never start my day without a cup of coffee from Tim Hortons and I tell everyone when out of town that I'm from Buffalo... AND, I just recently went to my first ever Sabres hockey game. I love my hometown.
I'm a 26 year old elementary school music teacher, and I really do love my job - all parts of it (even tying shoes 8 billion times a day, giving hugs and high fives 10 billion times, and saying things like "make good choices" and "keep your hands and feet to yourself" at least 12 dozen times an hour). I live in a busy household with two roommates: one who is a nursing student and has been my best friend for 20 years, and another friend I met while in college who is now preparing for law school. We also share the space with a really fat, spoiled cat and a dog who I swear has attention issues. It's a lot of people in a little space, but we make it work and the truth is, at the end of the day, I'm happy to be surrounded by busy-ness and people.

What inspires you? I wish I could say that music inspires me, since I'm a music teacher. Music motivates me to work harder and work faster, but it doesn't usually give me any kind of creative spark. People and life experiences, on the other hand, are the driving forces behind my pieces. There are certain colors I use to represent certain people in my life, and there are people who influence me to use certain mediums or techniques simply through their own creations and friendly conversation. If it weren't for you, Mia, I probably wouldn't be appreciating raw brass as much I do now! And I'm also using a lot of copper these days. When you first hired me, remember what a sterling snob I was at first? You've helped me to evolve. So, yeah. Talking with other people and the ways they touch my life....that's definitely my inspiration. (Side Note from Mia: I'll admit I used to be a sterling snob, too...)

Why do you create? What is your favorite part of creating? Hmmm...I'm really drawn to color and patterns. I think that's the biggest similarity in my photography and in my jewelry. I love things that are rich in color and make bold statements, and I design things that wouldn't necessarily be a perfect fit for myself, but for a variety of tastes in other people, as well. I like to make other people happy. :)

What is your favorite part of owning your own business? I like that I get to do things on my own terms. Since I'm a school music teacher as my main profession, my Etsy businesses are more of a hobby than a job. I get to dictate the terms of when I create new pieces, when I photograph them, when I post new listings/renew current ones, and when/how I promote. I don't have to be as hard on myself when something doesn't get done right away. Sometimes, I'm a good little worker bee and other times, I'm lazier than your average couch potato, but I don't beat myself up over leaving my work area idle for a few days. If I ever get to that point, I'll know that it's time to take a break from it all and remember why it was that I got into these interest areas in the first place: for the love of art...not to make a buck or two. Getting paid is just one tiny perk of this profession.

What are your other hobbies/interests? I enjoy singing in languages I don't actually know how to speak in during regular conversation and I play the guitar (really poorly) and piano (not so poorly). Other than Etsy and my musical life, I like to go bowling, play poker and spend time with my dog and my very patient and loving boyfriend. He never questions my new, crazy crafting ideas and he fully supports my intense bead and vintage camera collection habits. Oh, and I'm also (very) addicted to reality tv. That's so embarrassing to admit!

This months exhibition at Paper'n'Stitch has just opened, and I've set up shop! We'll see how it goes, I really like the layout. It reminds me of etsy's clean, simple layout and the fresh colors are perfect for spring. I've been incredibly busy with wedding jewelry for brides and bridal parties this past month, in addition to my new wholesale clients, and I want to keep the momentum going! It's spring break and we're a doggie hotel over here! OK, just one guest... but it's been entertainment for sure! Our poor guest, Charlie, is still a little apprehensive around Sadie. She's an only child, and spoiled rotten at that... (Did I mention how cute she is though?)... Hopefully she'll learn to share before Chuck heads home but either way we'll miss the little guy!

I've been eyeing these oh-so-sweet flower collars from PecanPiePuppies for awhile now. I always worry that Sadie will destroy anything that cute, but you can tell they are very well made and the shop states that "These collars are made to stand up to your messy and mischievous puppy" and can be thrown in the wash! Also loving the gorgeous floral fabrics used by APieceOfCraft in their pet mats and squeaker toys, and the hand sewn puppy tanks from DesignsByOne. And if you like to keep your decor modern and fresh while pampering your four legged friend, BumbleBellyDesigns' pillows and leash organizers & these simple outdoor pet beds from LoveBarklee are the way to go.

Currently, Sadie's sporting the "Happy Magic Forest" Collar from TheModDog. I love their designs, very bright & cheery not to mention incredibly durable. When Sadie thinks she's out hunting, I know I don't have to worry about a broken buckle or torn seem. She also has the thermal polka dot hoodie from Gilesk, although now that the snow is finally melted we may have to put it away until Fall... it is 'so' cute on her, especially the little hood... I'm going to miss it! There are so many adorable, well made and affordable options for pets on etsy; Collars, leashes, dishes, treats, toys, clothing, soaps, beds & items for owners and the home, too! I especially like the organic dog treats and shampoos, and I'm looking for an excuse to buy the Paris themed dog bowl. Tres chic? Oui!

As promised, a fresh new etsy shop... Please welcome Baboush! Greta is the girl behind Baboush and not only is she talented, she is a lovely, charming & sweet girl at that... enjoy!

My name is Greta, I'm 28 and I'm the girl behind "Baboush". I live in Italy in a small town on the beautiful and blue Garda lake (North-East of Italy)..here in my house I create everything you see in my shop. I'm a handmade-addict and I love to make many things with my own two hands: jewelry,sewing,drawing,crochet..My other big love is to recycle and repurpose things that already exist and have their own story and give them a new life..I put all of these passions together and created my little shop on Etsy, to see if other people liked my creations and findings...

What inspires you?
Everything can inspire me: a movie, the lake, talking with people, a song, my cats, a flower, a city...usually inspiration comes when I'm not thinking about inspiration! Sometimes it's a problem because if I have a new idea I must leave everything and run to my laboratory and make-make-make...

Why do you create? What is your favorite part of creating?
I love every part of the creative process: I love going to flea markets to find hidden objects, I love collect them, sew-paint-recycle them and transform them into something beautiful, new and wearable. I love making necklaces mixing many different elements, I love to wear my creations, to photograph them, to sell them..I even love to see my creations hanging on the walls of my really messy "laboratoire"!

What is your favorite part of owning your own business, or selling your creations?
I just started this new experience of selling on-line, but I can say that my favourite part of the business is to translate what I love to do into a job, and to feel free to express myself through the items I sell..they are all pieces of me!

When you aren't creating, what can we find you doing? (Although if you are like me, you probably create and work most of the time for fun!)
It's funny because all of my hobbies and interest are now part of "Baboush"..create-sew-draw-jewelry are my favourite activities. I also love to hang out with my friends, eat good food, drink good wine, swim and read.

Greta's Favorites:
Music: Rock-and-roll and raggae music!! I adore David Bowie, Ben Harper, Pearl Jam, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, Italian singer Vinicio Capossela...the list is really too long!!
Color: At the moment I am in love with white and yellow.
Food: I'm a good italian girl and I love pizza!! I'm vegetarian so I love vegetables and italian cheese. I drink too much espresso coffee and I love good red wine.
Travel: Hampi(India), London, Berlin, Rome, Venice, Madrid, Amsterdam, Bangkok, Paris.
Season: I love when the weather changes from hot to cold and viceversa, so I prefer autumn and spring!
Etsy shop: Too many to say! I love vintage clothes, furniture and photography shops. A few of my favourites at the moment are: Drawflowers, Skinny Swallow, CorrieBerry Pie, SoftSpoken, Rose LaBiche, and Calexandra... but there are many, many more...

So, check out what the etsy mud team did to celebrate... they've toilet papered their showcase and treasury! How fun is that?! I was expecting something from etsy themselves, last year they put up a featured seller called "watchman" who sold knock off watches on the streets of Brooklyn...
It worked too, quite a few people came in to the forums steaming about how obviously non-handmade his shop was. Next thing you knew, everyone was buying from his 'shop' and posting negative feedbacks. All in good fun, of course! Happy April Fools Day! I have to run... only 7 hours to finish boobie trapping the house before Kev get's home. What do you think, cereal all over the floor? Unscrew the lightbulbs? Nothing like crunching around in the dark...

{ The Dress }

It found me. No, I am not engaged... if you read my bio, I am 'engaged to be engaged' and have no problem keeping things that way for now. No rush, no hoopla, I've always wanted a very small, intimate wedding... no bridal party, although the Sade will have a mini tiara... definitely outdoors, maybe even barefoot on a beach? So this past week, my "Smoke" earrings were featured on two bridal blogs, Snippet & Ink and {grey} likes weddings, where you can enter to win your own pair by clicking on the photo of my earrings.

I spent some time looking around the blogs, and other blogs that they linked to since I am new to the wonderful world of blogging and came across the dress. I've never looked at any wedding dress, or been at a wedding and thought to myself "Oh hey, that could be me one day!" or "That dress looks like it would be fun to wear all day!". Haha, but really... it's just not me. Apparently I just hadn't found the right dress.

Summer Love :: Hurry, Please

Wonderful day. Wonderful week. I'm finally feeling better (had a cold last week!) and things are just good. I don't think I've been in such a good mood in a year, and I'm generally a happy- maybe even an overally happy, enthusiastic, and chatty- person. Anyways, I found my wedding dress... there's more about that to come later... and not only did I score U2 tickets for the show in Chicago, but I also got Phish tickets today. The shows were selling out in minutes, so we were lucky. There's nothing like a summer concert, just don't get me started on the cell phones replacing lighters, or the people who try to record the entire concert by holding their phone or camera in the air... haha...
Last summer we saw Tom Petty (again!) and had super close seats right in the center. The other times I was back in the lawn, and as much as I usually enjoy it, there was a crazy thunderstorm during this last concert. Between the rain hitting the pavilion, the thunder and the noise of the crowd, the energy was amazing... everyone in the lawn was soaked. I was happy to be dry, I've had my share of concert rain. Ruined my favorite white shirt at an Ani concert that way- I had just died my hair red, and reds like to run... Back to the story: The lights and audio stopped a couple of times, and at one point we thought they were going to have to end the show, but they came back and put on a damn good performance.
For Phish, we have lawn seats which always proves to be an interesting experience... for any of you who have been to a Phish show, you know exactly what I mean. I was lucky enough to see them in Coventry, Vermont at their 'last' festival. The concert grounds flooded and we ended up camping on the thruway for almost 48 hours hoping we'd make it in. We did.
In September, we're flying to Chicago to see U2 and we're also going to see them play in Toronto (one night just isn't enough). They're playing stadiums for this tour so even though we might not be as close, the energy from the crowd will make for an amazing performance. I really can't wait. I've been waiting for summer all winter, and now I just want fall! xo

My blog is getting a makeover soon! The lovely Sara of Sassy Cat Graphics is helping me design a whole new look to match the gorgeous new stickers she made for my packaging and my new banners from Thompson Designs. I always loved my old (the 'original') Mia Beads banner and logo design, but with all of the sprucing up I've been doing in my shop, it's time for a change.

Here's one of my newest pieces, I just love this locket... and the photo. I guess I wasn't the only one either, it sold within a couple hours of listing it in my shop yesterday.

So, now for the good stuff...

Remember the sparkling rhinestones, trinkets, hearts and bows you just adored as a little girl? Well they're here for you again. . .
. . . all grown up this time!

I've been listing new pretties in my etsy shop all week- and not only do I still have a ton more to list, but I've had boxes of fun, new supplies coming in daily! My spring line features pastel colors and simple designs featuring little trinkets and lots of sparkle. Lots of vintage, and even gold. I've never offered gold in my shop before, so I was a little nervous, but it's been selling well. You might have also noticed my photos are brighter... since I bought my new camera I've been brainstorming new display ideas and finally decided to let go of my dark, colored backgrounds (oh, how I adored my polka dots and flowery papers) and try something new. I found some neat vintage style linen one day while I was out and I've been loving it- ledger papers, french text, and bright white light to let my jewelry stand out, while still having character in my photos. AND, though I was prepared for a few slower months, things have been pretty busy thanks to the blushing brides clearing me out of pearls and crystals! I listed my new limited edition "Audrey" necklace last night, and only have 2 left today! They'll be adorning bridesmaids in a spring wedding. I also got a large wholesale order from a great little shop in Brooklyn, NY- The owner is so sweet and I think she'll be keeping me busy! Yay for spring! I haven't posted in a bit, but there wasn't been all that much going on. Just business as usual... and I got summoned for jury duty. Of course, after I put my summons in a very safe place I couldn't find it. After calling every court imaginable and having them all tell me that I'm not in their system, I'm a little worried about getting arrested for failure to perform my civic duty! So today, I'm making orders in the attic and I need some of my new supplies... guess what's tucked safely in with my vintage charms and lockets? That's right.... and it's dated today. Thankfully, my number wasn't chosen yet so I won't be doing any jail time- what luck!
So my Dad is really one of the luckiest people. Not lottery-winning luck, but the stuff that counts and makes life fun. Last week he left for NYC, where he got tickets to the Letterman show (airing tonight, March 2nd)... and guess who's performing?! U2. Bono. Now, I've had a crush on Bono since I was 3 years old. I played their "Rattle & Hum" VHS over and over and over like most kid's do with their Disney movies... and yes, I quoted some choice Bono phrases at that age as well. I went to my first U2 concert when I was 14, and then dragged my Dad up to Canada with me for another where we waited in line for 13 hours in the freezing cold but made it to the front of the "heart" where Bono walked out on peoples' hands and sang right in front of us. I should find the pictures I took- they're amazing. SO, guess who didn't take me to see Bono today?! haha, I think he actually did feel bad (even though we'll be seeing them again soon on their upcoming tour, hopefully more than once!) so he went to the Hard Rock and bought me the new shirt Bono designed. The proceeds go to charity and the shirt reads "Fish Can Fly..." with Bono's signature. SO, before the Letterman taping this afternoon, my Dad waited along the side of the building with some other fans and photogrpahers- my shirt in hand. An SUV pulls up and Adam Clayton walks in, then the Edge... and then Bono's SUV pulls up. He gets out and signs a few autographs, talks to fans, and my Dad shouts "Bono! I was planning on posting about my Valentine's Day on the couch with a pup and a heart shaped pizza, but plans change. The boyfriend surprised me with mmmm.... Olive Garden. One of my many food addictions. Unfortunately, the wait was longer than they were open, and we couldn't get through calling (for over 30 mintes!) to reserve a table! Apparently, I'm not the only one with an Olive Garden fetish, yeesh.... so we ended up getting it to-go, with a movie rental and bottle of cabernet. perfection... and we still ended up on the couch.

I love something about Valentine's Day. We're planning on avoiding restaurants, since it falls on a Saturday this year, so maybe a heart shaped chicken finger pizza? Yes, the pizza shop around the corner makes them every heart day. We almost got one last year, but this year I'm thinking it's a definite, with a nice bottle of wine curled up to watch a movie? Needless to say, I won't be going out in vintage shoes and a one-of-a-kind skirt... but I can still window shop, right?

Saturday Afternoon

I love buttons!It's an obsession with colorful things in glass jars, I suppose. If you can relate, you'll love this picture. My boyfriend on the other hand was not so pleased to find the kitchen overrun with buttons when he got home... My mom came over yesterday afternoon to eat pizza and make stuff. You'll see lots of new button stack embellishments in our Paper Shop soon! I finally finished my lockets, it was a fun process and I'm happy with how they turned out. I'll be listing them in my etsy shop this evening. They have such a vintage glam feeling...

How can you say "No" to that face?! If her Kevin was home, she wouldn't even try it, but apparently she thinks she's in charge when it's just us. I have to go now, if those buttons aren't gone when Kevin gets home from work in 20 minutes....!

What a fun morning! I had some packages that I hadn't opened yet, and one I just couldn't because it was too cute! I bought some Hello Kitty origami paper from Kawaii Stationary and I'm planning on making bubble magnets with some of it- every sheet is too cute! I feel like a five year old trapped in my adult body sometimes... I still have tons of Hello Kitty stuff from the 1980's... even teeny tiny bubble gum!

In the next package was three huge lavender sachets, made with lovely vintage fabrics, from Espanolita. The scent of lavender was filling the kitchen before I even opened the package.

Last, some really cool vintage lockets- still wrapped in old newspaper. I'm antiquing them and attaching gorgeous Swarovski crystal filigree to the front. Matching rings, too! I've had this idea in my head for weeks now, but I didn't have all of the supplies and then last week was so crazy- I'm hoping to list some new items in my etsy shop tonight & tomorrow.... I'll post some photos of the new creations here, too! I can't wait! Oh, and the Sade actually let me take her picture this morning... she looks like she's posing....
